NILES- May is filled with good reasons to visit the Children's Department of the Niles District Library
Take some time out for a couple games of chess. On Saturday, May 3 and 17 the Chess Club meets at 9:30 a.m. Join this fast growing group and improve your game through instruction and practice. Anyone can learn to play and play well.
Let's celebrate the bookmark. Book etiquette dictates that no page should be creased on purpose. Always use a bookmark to locate the page where you stopped reading. In May the bookmark will be honored with coloring pages full of bookmarks, a bookmark guessing game and a collection of bookmarks to view.
Get ready for the Garden Show. On Saturday, May 10 at 1 p.m. the kids will be gearing up for the big flower show in June. The adult leaders from the Niles Garden Club will review all the children's categories and prepare them with ideas and practical pointers. Flower show details are available in the Children's Department.
May surprises come to Preschool Story Time. A hodgepodge of happy subjects will delight the children in May with stories about outer space, pirates, eggs and dinosaurs. Pick any of our Wednesday programs at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. No registration is required. Older children can be helpers by volunteering on the day of the story time.
Something new is being added to our programming! The Squigglers, our new lapsit program is designed for children from birth to approximately 30 months. Each week's session will contain: an alphabet letter, music with instrument playing, finger-plays, exercises and a short 1 to two minute learning story. Every phase will stimulate the child's imagination but at the same time get them ready for group situations where longer attention spans and manners are required. The first class meets Wednesday, May 7 at 11 a.m. Squigglers continue through the summer on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. Parents are encouraged to linger after this 15 minute program to interact in our play area.
Our summer reading program will start soon. A sure sign of summer is when the library begins handing out the summer reading calendars. Because this program is for everyone the entire family can get their individual calendars starting May 21st in the Children's Department. Our theme this year is "Catch the Reading Bug" Monday, June 2 is the first day to start recording the minutes and hours read. Watch for further details on our web site or get a brochure in the Children's Department.
