NILES – Once again the students at Howard and Ellis elementary schools have helped raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
During the school's Math-A-Thon, now in its 26th year, students obtain sponsors who contribute based on the number of math problems the students complete in special workbooks, which are provided.
Six Flags theme parks provide free passes to their parks for every student who raises $35 or more.
The fundraiser teaches more than just math problems, as they learn the importance of helping children who are less fortunate than themselves.
In 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia was 4 percent. Today it is 94 percent.
"We are proud of our students for working so hard on the Math-A-Thon," said Peggy Maiers, volunteer coordinator. "I also want to extend our thanks to the Niles community for supporting our students."
