BUCHANAN – The final touches are being completed for the 2008 National Arbor Day Celebration hosted by the Buchanan Garden Club. The celebratory program is being held in downtown Buchanan at the corner of Front and Oak St. at the Gazebo Park at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 25. Members of the community are cordially invited to attend along with those who have been invited. In case of inclement weather, the program will take place at the Buchanan High School auditorium, 401 W. Chicago St.-one block west of Front St. This is a special celebration as Buchanan is also celebrating its founding 150 years ago.
The Buchanan High School Redbud Chorale and members of the BHS Band will be offering special music throughout the celebration, Sen. Ron Jelenik and Rep. Neal Nitz will both be speaking, members of the BHS Environmental Studies class will be presenting two original literary works, and the entire sixth grade class from Buchanan Middle School will be in attendance to further enhance their extensive study of environmental science.
A Proclamation from the Buchanan City Commission recognizing National Arbor Day will be read by Mayor Dr. Patricia Moore and City Manager Meg Mullendore will offer some thoughts regarding Arbor Day and the founding of the city of Buchanan. The program will close with Father Mathew Manalel's blessing of the trees.
The Buchanan Garden Club has been in existence for over 100 years and works to beautify the streetscapes of Buchanan. This year's major projects are redesigning the "Welcome to Buchanan" sign and garden at the corner of Redbud Trail and Front St. and planting and maintaining large flower pots in the downtown area throughout the summer and fall. The Garden Club is open to anyone in the community who would like to learn more about decorative gardening and would enjoy serving the city of Buchanan.
