BERRIEN SPRINGS- Fifth graders will travel on April 23 and 24 to the Youth Fair Grounds in Berrien Springs for the 14th annual Natural Resource Day event.
This year, over 900 fifth grade students from 23 Berrien County Schools will be learning techniques to help conserve natural resources and protect the environment in our communities. Participants spend the morning rotating among sessions titled "Cool Facts About Plants," Soil &Water Conservation," "Turning Trash Into Treasure," "Wonders of Wildlife" and "The Great Outdoors." Students explore these topics by doing hands-on activities and talking with professionals from a variety of Natural Resource related careers. Students will also receive a bottle of juice, donated by National Grape/Welches.
The students will not go home empty handed. Each student will take home educational packets containing items such as environmental coloring books, pencils made from recycled newspaper, Earth Day bracelets, stickers and other fun educational materials. They will also receive a white pine seedling and a packet of wildflower seeds to use at their school or home.
Resource Day ties into Michigan Arbor Week, Earth Day, Soil Stewardship Week, National Drinking water Week, National Science &Technology Week and National Wildlife Week.
Berrien County Farm Bureau offered a transportation grant to schools wishing to attend the event. The more schools are able to attend this event because of their generosity. This event could not have been so successful without the continuous hard work and dedication from the various sponsors and volunteers that return each year. The 2008 Fifth Grade Natural Resource Day is cooperatively sponsored by the following: Berrien County MSU Extension, Environmental Health Dept., Parks Dept./Love Creek Nature Center, and Resource Recovery Program, Berrien County Conservation District, Berrien County Intermediate School District, Berrien County Youth Fair, Berrien County Farm Bureau, Southeast Berrien County Landfill, Fernwood Botanical Garden &Nature Center, National Grape/Welches, Prism Science &Technology, Subway of Berrien Springs, McDonalds of Berrien Springs and Barbott Farms &Greenhouses.
, and many other volunteers who come together to make this day a success.
