CASSOPOLIS – Two drivers from Dowagiac collided in Pokagon Township Friday evening.
Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports his deputies handled the personal-injury accident at 6:04 p.m. April 18 at the intersection of M-51 and Pennsylvania Street.
According to witnesses, Nicole Smith, 23, of Dowagiac, was traveling on Pennsylvania Street when she rolled through the stop sign at M-51.
She did not yield to oncoming traffic and proceeded to turn left onto M-51 into the path of an oncoming vehicle traveling north.
The second vehicle, driven by Phillip Lang, 47, of Dowagiac, was unable to avoid the Smith vehicle and they collided.
Lang was not hurt in the accident, but his passenger, Connie Lang, was transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac for treatment of her injuries.
Smith, along with 1-year-old Luke Sheffield and 5-year-old Taylor Sheffield, were all taken to Lakeland-Niles for treatment of their injuries.
Seatbelts and car seats were used at the time of the accident.
Deputies reported that alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, which remained under investigation.
SMCAS, the Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service of Niles, and Pokagon firefighters, assisted deputies at the scene.
