The Dowagiac junior varsity tennis team defeated Eau Claire on Monday 5-3.
Winning singles matches for the Chieftains were Breneesha Jones, Michele Dowsett and Carole Kumin.
Jones defeated Heather Beally 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4, while Dowsett defeated Mackenzie Burks 6-1 and 6-2.
Kumin won by forfeit.
The Chieftains picked up doubles wins with Chelsea Allison and Tori Gaideski at No. 1 and the No. 2 doubles team of Shannon Keene and Emily Means.
Allison and Gaideski defeated Jessica Ratter and Brittany Fitz 6-1 and 6-1. Keene and Means were 6-3, 5-7 an 6-3 winners over Sarah Steinke and Kim Kennedy.
"First match of the season and for life for most of the girls," Dowagiac coach David Vibbert said. "They represented Dowagiac well in playing and etiquette. Our serving was good all the way down for the most part. We need to keep working on movement, reading the hit and getting to the ball.
"Our three singles (Michele) and one doubles (Chelsea, Tori) were in pure domination over their opponents. Second singles (Breneesha) really had to fight to keep in the match. After losing the second set, she kept a good attitude. Her last game of the third set she was down love-40 at set score 5-4. She hung in there and came back and overcame her opponent 6-4.
Second doubles (Shannon, Emily) had to keep up good spirits after losing their second set, but came back to handily win the third set."
