Spotlight of the week:
Did you know that children with mentors were: 46 percent less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27 percent less likely to begin using alcohol, 53 percent less likely to skip school and 33 percent less likely to engage in violence? Young people with mentors feel more competent about their ability to do well in school and report more positive relationships with friends and parents.
Isn't it amazing that one hour of your time a week can make such a difference! During National Mentoring Month why not consider mentoring? Who mentored you? Why not thank them by passing it on and mentoring someone in 2008!
Check out mentoring and other volunteer opportunities either on-line at www.volunteerswmi.org or call the Volunteer Center to connect.
ADULTS
4-H has a Mentoring Michigan Initiative that pairs interested mentors with youth. Their focus is on working with the juvenile justice system and at risk youth. Make a difference, mentor today!
Children who are abused or neglected need someone to speak for their best interests in the court system. Are you that person? Cass County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are trained community volunteers who are at least 21 years old, pass a criminal background check and complete the training provided.Days and times of volunteering are flexible depending on schedules; however, a court report and appearance must be conducted every 91 days. Be a powerful voice in a child's life.
Do you take your car for granted? Many of us forget without a car getting places such as doctor appointments becomes very difficult. For Berrien County Department of Human Services clients there is no public transportation available to medical appointments outside Berrien County. You can be matched to drive anytime Monday- Friday that meets your schedule. You must show proof of current car insurance, have a good driving record and have good people skills.
FAMILIES
Have you been thinking about our military serving far from home? Even if you didn't have time to do anything over the holidays you can get involved with the Blue Star Mothers of America. They send care packages and have activities all year long.
YOUTH
Calling all students…..what are your volunteer plans for 2008? Are you ready to get involved, but not sure how? Need to keep track of your volunteer hours for scholarships or schools? Check out our new interactive volunteer web site at www.volunteerswmi.org. You can search volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and schedule; as well as create a profile for yourself to track your hours. Any questions? Call John at the Volunteer Center to connect.
