Few acts of volunteerism have as far reaching results as that of being a mentor.
Today more than ever, there are so many children who lack even one adult in their lives who they can look up to, learn from and wish to emulate.
Mentoring isn't time consuming, often one hour a week is all it takes. The impact though on a young boy or girl is so much more.
January is National Mentoring Month. What a great New Year's resolution – to become a mentor.
Many opportunities exist in your own community. You can check with your own school district to find out what programs exists. There is always the Cass County Youth Club and the Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
Another way to find out about area mentoring programs which could really use some help would be to call the Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan, 210 Main St., Suite 237, 605 Pleasant St., Niles, MI 49120. For more information, call 683-5464 or visit www.volunteerswmi.org.
You don't have to be extra smart, rich or experienced. What you do need are ears to listen, for many of these children would love to have someone who listens.
Think about the benefits and plan today to give of yourself. You won't be sorry.
