ST. JOSEPH – Berrien County Sheriff L. Paul Bailey announced Tuesday he will seek a third term.
Bailey will seek the Republican nomination in the primary election on Aug. 5, 2008.
"I have been honored to be sheriff of Berrien County for the past seven years," Bailey said. "I am running for re-election to continue the work that we began when I took office in 2001."
"I was elected by the citizens of Berrien County in 2001 because of my vision for the future of the Sheriff's Department. My focus continues to be on improving public safety for the entire county.
"Despite the county's difficult financial challenges, I am more committed than ever to maintain the level of service this administration has brought to the public.
"As I look back over the past seven years, we have accomplished great things."
Improved training for all Sheriff's Department personnel.
Continued greater visibility to the public by attending monthly township meetings with a written report listing the patrol activity for that jurisdiction during the previous month.
Continued to aggressively seek out alternative funding for the Sheriff's Department by searching for available grants.
Increased road patrol services by contracting with local government agencies to provide dedicated police protection. These agencies include New Buffalo Township, Niles Township, Watervliet Township and Coloma Township (additional marine patrols on Paw Paw Lake).
100-percent compliant with Department of Corrections mandates for the jail facility for the past five years.
"I continue my dedicated service to you, as I work diligently toward the betterment of the department and the community. I am asking you, the voter, to allow me to continue the progress that we have made over the last seven years," Bailey said.
