Every year, Americans give millions and millions of dollars to different charities and organizations. The help is much needed and often goes directly to the cause claimed by the organization. However, there are people and companies who live to scam others so that's why it's important, especially this time of year, to know and understand where your money is going. So before you reach for your pocket change, checkbooks and dollar bills, know exactly where your money will land.
People care deeply about others, especially here in America. Many want nothing more than to help those in need. There are many worthwhile charities that will put your money to good use, but with so many choices, how will you know which one is right?
For starters, always give to an organization you are familiar with. If you are unsure of an organization, contact your City Hall for a listing of legit charities.
Be on the look out for scammers and con artists. These people will often approach you in person at a crowded place or by phone. If you come across someone that seems leery, contact local law enforcement officials.
Also be on the look out for false charity names. Often times, scammers will make up a name of an organization to resemble that of a true organization.
Remember, it's always good to give, but it's even more important to give wisely.
