NILES – A physical, sometimes ugly game, didn't bother Brandywine girls' varsity basketball coach Mark Zache.
The Lady Bobcats got out in front of visiting River Valley Tuesday night and then slowly, but surely pulled away to a 41-28 Lakeland Conference victory.
"It was an ugly win, but every conference game is going to be an ugly win," Zache said. "It's a tough conference, and it's always physical."
Brandywine (3-3, 3-0 Lakeland) got out to a quick 12-2 lead after one period of play, but could never put the Lady Mustangs away.
River Valley kept chipping away the Lady Bobcats' advantage, finally getting it down to 20-13 by the intermission.
Both teams continued to struggle offensively in the second half, but Brandywine upped its advantage to 11-points, 31-20, by the end of the third quarter and then outscored River Valley (2-1, 2-1 Lakeland) 12-10 in the final eight minutes to earn the victory.
Brandywine had five more field goals than River Valley did, but was just 9-of-22 from the free throw line.
Hitting a few more charity stripe tosses would have made it a much more comfortable lead, especially in the first half.
"Those free throws in the first half almost killed us," Zache said. "We have to work on that some more."
Jenna Marshman led a balanced Brandywine attack with 12 points. The Lady Bobcats also got nine points from Emily Low, eight points from Alexa Perry and seven points from Katie Smallwood.
Tera Koebel's 10 points led River Valley.
