VICKSBURG – The Niles varsity wrestling team opened up its 2007-08 season Thursday night with a pair of victories.
The Vikings (2-0) defeated Mattawan in their first match, 37-28, and then knocked off Vicksburg, 54-15.
Winning two matches on the night for the Vikings were Nate Allison, Gage Pearison, Eric Dulcet, Terrance Eppenger and Kenyon Ellison.
"It was a good start to the season," first-year Niles coach Todd Hesson said. "We still have some work to do."
Hesson noted that Wirick and Allison had big wins against Mattawan.
Niles will get to work again on Saturday as they host an invitational tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
Niles will be hosting Buchanan, Edwardsburg, Sturgis and Centreville.
Niles will open up with Sturgis at 10 a.m., while Buchanan will wrestle Centreville.
In the second round, Centreville will take on the Vikings and the Eddies will face Sturgis.
The third round will have Niles taking on Edwardsburg and Buchanan taking on Sturgis.
The fourth round will consist of Niles and Buchanan on one mat and Edwardsburg and Centreville on the second mat.
The final round will feature Buchanan against Edwardsburg and Centreville against Sturgis.
