EAU CLAIRE – Buchanan's varsity wrestling team got their season headed in the right direction Wednesday night at Eau Claire High School.
The Bucks picked up a 62-18 win over Lawton in their first match of the night and followed that up with an impressive 58-12 win over Mendon to open the season with a 2-0 record.
"Obviously we are glad to get out of the gate 2-0, but thought we were a little impatient," Buchanan coach Frank Mucha said. "We were trying to make things happen when they weren't there. This was the first night for most of these guys and the first time in a line up. We'll see what we are made of Saturday."
Buchanan travels to the Niles on Saturday for the Viking Invitational slated to begin at 10 a.m.
Austin Ferris hit a milestone in his wrestling career picking up his 100th win with a victory against Lawton's Kyle Carter. Ferris pinned Carter at 1:46 to boost the Bucks lead to 57-18.
Buchanan jumped out in front early as three veteran Buck wrestlers picked up pins. David Ferris (189), Mike Connors (215) and Robert Riggs (285) came away with pins. The next three bouts were forfeit wins for Buchanan to give the Bucks a 36-0 advantage.
After two Lawton pins Drew Medlin picked up a 9-2 decision win followed by a pair of pins by Adam Byrdak (140) and Jaime Marbeiter (145) for a 51-12 lead. Aaron Leneway finished the match with a 18-1 technical fall victory.
"Tony (Taylor) wrestling at 152 ran into a buzz saw in his match, that is a good kid," Mucha said of Mendon's Don McCann's pin victory over Taylor. "We have never beaten him in the three years that we have wrestled him so he's a good kid, a state qualifier, and Tony has to get down to his weight class which would be 140-45."
Against Mendon, Connors (215), got the Bucks rolling with an opening match pin. Riggs (285) and Taylor Glavin (103) each picked up decision wins before Mendon picked up their first points of the contest at 112.
Two forfeits by Mendon at 119 and 125 tacked on 12 more points for the Bucks and a 24-6 lead. Mendon gained their final six points of the night at 130 with a pin by Justin McClish over D. J. Hurd.
The rest of the match belonged to the Bucks with Byrdak (140) taking a 7-2 decision, Marbeiter (145) a 13-5 major decision and Tony Taylor (152) earned a pin victory.
Auston Ferris (171) had a pin sandwiched between a pair of forfeits to finish out the night on the winning end.
