NILES – If you have a few hours to spare and are capable of ringing a bell, the Salvation Army of Niles needs your help!
This year more than ever, Salvation Army's all over the country are in need of bell ringers. So much so, that Wal-Mart employees have been stepping in to help collect money for those in need.
On Tuesday, every Wal-Mart nationwide participated in the bell ringing as store associates, managers and executives took turns ringing the bell.
Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott was at the Battle Creek store, where Good Morning America did an interview on the kindness of the Wal-Mart employees.
"The Salvation Army is having problems getting bell ringers this year and Wal-Mart wanted to help," Tom Harvel, Niles store manager said.
All money raised from the cans helps not only around the holiday season, but year round as well.
"It goes to everything. Food, Christmas toys, utility and rent programs, the food pantry, soup kitchen – it helps in more ways than one," Capt. Bill Walters of the Salvation Army said.
Niles' Wal-Mart began its bell ringing season on Nov. 17 and will continue through Christmas Day. Volunteers are needed Monday through Sunday.
"If you are available for a few hours, can stand the cold and are able to ring a bell, you can do this job. It's not a lot of time and you're helping a great cause," Walters added.
Those interested in volunteering can call the Salvation Army of Niles at 684-2660.
