There are less than two weeks before the winter sports season kicks off.
It's hard to believe that we are about to launch into yet another sports season.
What happened to the fall sports?
That season seemed to race by. I know I am getting old, but it seems like only yesterday it was August and we were kicking off the fall sports season.
I guess success makes things go a lot faster and many of our teams tasted success throughout the fall months.
While there were a few cliches, I think the switching of the seasons went pretty smoothly.
There were some teams affected by the change of some sports, while others picked up a few new athletes who helped out their programs tremendously.
Now it is time to head into winter and things are going to get pretty interesting with boys and girls both playing basketball at the same time.
Four games a week means from some scrambling on our part to get them all covered.
It will take some getting used to having basketball games on Monday and Thursday nights.
The only time I have personally covered games on those nights is during the post season or an occasional make up game caused by the weather.
Sandwiched in between basketball games will be wrestling on Wednesday night.
With very few exceptions, wrestling will have its own stage from now on.
Wrestling programs used to have to share the spotlight on Wednesdays with volleyball.
Saturdays may become a little hectic as basketball and wrestling will share the spotlight.
Some schools have opted to play Saturday afternoon noon basketball games, while others will play in the evening.
That will make for some very long days.
My hope is that things run smoothly like they did during the fall season.
I didn't hear too many complaints from parents, athletes or school administrators over the switching of volleyball to the fall.
What I do know is that it opened up some opportunities for kids to play another sport.
I have spent some of the past couple of weeks reflecting on the fall.
I am now getting excited about getting into the winter sports season.
I think we have some outstanding teams, who are going to compete for conference, division and state honors.
I will be a busy boy over the next few months, but that can be a good thing too.
So let's get the games started.
I look forward to seeing many of my coaching friends, who I have not seen since last year.
I also look forward to watching out athletes perform to the best of their abilities.
I know they will make us proud.
