Grants secure jobs

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm announced a total of $1,440,500 in Economic Development Job Training grants to upgrade the skills of 2,500 workers, including 512 new hires, employed by 35 companies around the state.
"Michigan workers are second to none," Granholm said. "As we work to attract businesses and investments to Michigan, we want to make sure our workers get the skills they need to help Michigan manufacturers be competitive in the 21st century."
Funding is provided by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation as part of the Manufacturing Competitiveness Program, an initiative to encourage collaboration between regional employers.
A grant of $500,000 will be used to upgrade the skills of 478 current workers and four new hires at 17 companies in Baraga, Berrien, Hillsdale, Ingham, Kent, Lapeer, Macomb, Oakland, Ottawa, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. The MCP grant will support training through Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center to National Standard in Niles, one current employee;
EDJT funds in the amount of $636,500 will be used to support skills upgrading for 1,178 current workers and 475 new hires at nine companies including the Working Person's Store in Buchanan, $25,000 for 25 current employees, 25 new hires, at Lake Michigan College.
