NILES – We all remember the crazy clothing styles of the 1980s – tight-rolled pants, baggy shirts, colored socks and wearing anything neon colored was the thing to do.
Would you still rock that style today? Probably not, unless you were dressing up for a special event.
Unfortunately, the Niles High School Marching Band is somewhat stuck in the 80s, considering that's the last time they were able to purchase new band uniforms.
"1989 was the last time new the band saw new uniforms. We all know that over time, clothes tend to give away and that's what's happening to the uniforms. They are being held together with gum and duct tape," Niles High School Band Director Steven Gruver said.
At a far distance, Gruver said the problems are unnoticed, however, when you get closer, you can see the wear and tear on the uniforms.
Band members are hoping to raise $56,000, which is how much the new uniforms will cost. Members and their parents have been actively fundraising and now they are asking for the community to step in and help.
From now until Nov. 27, band members from the high school and Ring Lardner Middle School will be kicking off its 46th annual Fruit Sale, which offers different varieties of oranges and grapefruit in 10, 20 and 40-pound boxes directly from Florida Indian River Groves. Navel, Juice and Tangelo oranges as well as Florida Red Grapefruit will be available for purchase. Customers may also purchase mixed orange and grapefruit boxes.
"Our Fruit Sale has been a huge success over the years and we're hoping to have another successful year. The community really steps up for this fundraiser," Gruver said.
The goal is to be able to order the uniforms in February for a July delivery date if this sale goes well.
"The Niles High School band has represented Niles with a lot of class over the years. The kids are always doing something positive in the community, including being part of parades, volunteering and helping out in many other ways. Now we are asking for the community for their help," Gruver said.
Customers may purchase fruit securely online at http://www.fruitorder.com by visiting the "Order Fundraising" logo. Enter the Organization ID "723992" in the provided space. Orders will be delivered by band members around Dec. 15.
