Niles City approves all agenda items

NILES – It was another short night at the Niles City Council meeting as all items on the agenda were briefly discussed and approved.
The council accepted the low bid of $144,800 from Bud Welch Sales &Engineering of Grand Blanc, for the purchase of a 10 MVA Station Power Transformer for use by the Electric Division.
Also being approved was the addition of Larry Verhostra of 1160 Huntly Rd. Niles to the Randy Rentz five-year ground lease agreement at Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport.
Also, it was approved to transfer a five-year ground lease from Robert Jackson, holder of the lease, to Dan and Gayle Carson of 4829 Hanover Rd. in Sawyer.
Other items approved included:
A request from the Police Department to accept an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant No. 2007-DJ-BX-1129 in the amount of $10,899 and approve an additional 10 percent local match of $1,989 for a total of $12,888 to be used for the purchase of patrol car LED light bars, taser guns and handguns.
A request from Tom Majerek to allow a subordination agreement for an existing mortgage in the amount of $50,000 for the property at 217 E. Main St.
A request to bid on the noxious weed contract from Jack Frost, a City of Niles firefighter.
The bids for three-year Grounds Maintenance Contracts: $132,960.00 from JL's Lawn Care of LaPorte, Ind. for parks ground maintenance; $11,184.00 from Simmons Tree and Lawn of Niles for parking lot maintenance work and $40 per hour from Jack Frost for mowing of noxious weeds were all approved.
The appointments of Mary-Jane Waterhouse and Autumn Marie Carey to the Public Parks and Recreation board were approved.
