NILES – A Niles man was taken into custody early Wednesday morning after shots were fired during an almost two-hour standoff with police in the 2300 block of Floral Drive in Niles Township.
Lt. Tim Ganus of the Berrien County Sheriff's Office reported that the man is pending arraignment at Berrien County Fifth District Court on weapons offenses and obstructing justice charges.
According to the police report, at approximately 4:10 a.m., Niles Township Officer J.R. Johnson and Berrien County Deputy Justin Hopkins were dispatched to the Floral address on a 911 call that shots were being fired. Officers arrived to find the man armed with a long gun.
The subject fled inside the residence while officers began to set up a security perimeter outside. Once inside, the subject fired three to four shots.
Later, officers contacted the subject by telephone and took him into custody without further incident.
"At this time we are still investigating. We hope to know a little more early this morning," Sgt. Randy Mull of the Berrien County Sheriff's Department said.
Niles City Police, Four Winds Tribal Police and the Berrien County Tactical Response Unit (TRU) also assisted in the incident.
