Niles JV spikers fall in finale

NILES – The Niles junior varsity volleyball team was defeated by Berrien Springs in the finals of its own invitational tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Vikings reached the finals by splitting with Berrien Springs in the opening match of the tournament, 25-17, 8-25; defeating Brandywine, 25-23 and 25-10; and defeating Eau Claire, 25-12 and 25-19.
In the semifinals, Niles defeated the Berrien Springs freshmen team in two games.
Against the Lady Shamrock junior varsity in the title match, the Lady Vikings lost 27-25, 14-25 and 8-15.
No statistics were kept for the Niles junior varsity team according to coach Alyse Hoyt said.
Hoyt did single out sophomore setter Shannon McKeel, sophomore hitter Jenna Grannell and freshmen libero Dana Del Muro for their play on Saturday.
Brandywine Freshmen Volleyball
The Lady Bobcats lost twice and split with Cassopolis at the Niles tournament on Saturday.
Brandywine was defeated by Berrien Springs 24-25 and 17-25; by the Niles' freshmen squad, 22-25 and 15-25. In its final match, the Lady Bobcats split with the Cassopolis junior varsity squad, 25-23 and 20-25.
Against Berrien Springs, Lauren Hopper and Allie Harris both had four aces, while Kelsey Prestly had four kills.
In the Niles match, Haley Whitehead had three aces and Prestly five kills.
Against Cassopolis, Hopper had three aces, Harris four aces and Prestly four kills.
