On Saturday, Aug. 4, at 4:23 p.m., deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to a personal injury accident on I-94 near Verona Road in Marshall Township Calhoun County.
Upon arrival, deputies noticed a Dodge Durango had rolled into the median, ejecting and killing Arthur Lee Hamilton, 49, of Niles.
There were a total of seven passengers in the vehicle, including 37 year-old Doreen Ruggles of Niles and five children ages 2-12 years old. Ruggles is also seven months pregnant.
Three children were airlifted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo by three separate helicopters, two from the University of Michigan and one from Bronson. Some of the children remain in critical condition.
Deputies believe alcohol and speed were factors in the collision, which is currently under investigation.
