NILES – Most residents breathed a sigh of relief when much-needed rain soaked the area late Wednesday night and throughout the day on Thursday.
However, the rain caused an overflow at the City's Water Treatment Plant, located at 21 Marmon Street Thursday morning.
Superintendent Terry Benish said the plant had a Retention Basin overflow of 1.18 million gallons due to the heavy rains. It started around 7 a.m.
"Basically, what happens is the basin fills up and the water is discharged into the St. Joseph River," Benish said.
Benish said the overflow should not cause any problems and that everything should be back to normal once the rain clears.
The basin holds three and a half million gallons, and by the second rainfall Thursday morning, it was completely full, he said.
