NILES – Many came out to see the 22nd annual Niles fireworks display Tuesday night at Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport.
The event was another hit, as eager attendees waited patiently throughout the evening for the big colorful display to begin, many showing up three hours before dusk, just to get a good seat, enjoy conversation with friends and eat lots of delicious food either brought from home, or bought at the concession stand on the Apple Festival grounds.
People came from all over just to watch the annual event, which kicked off right around 10 p.m.
"We are actually in town visiting relatives for the holiday and thought we'd come see the fireworks," Kathy Dusenburg of Iowa said. "Usually we spend our holiday at home and the family comes and visits us, but this year we decided to come to Niles and we've had a great time so far."
Dusenburg's two children, Alyssa, 5, and Tyler, 7, were both excited to see the show. "I can't wait. I like when the fireworks go boom and make all the pretty colors," Alyssa said.
Arlene and Joseph Rodgers drove in town from St. Joseph, saying they both enjoy coming to Niles to see the show.
"This is our sixth year coming to Niles. We just decided to come down one year because usually these fireworks fall on a different day than ours do in St. Joe. So we came down and really enjoyed the show and have been coming ever since," Joseph said.
Kids enjoyed sparklers and fountains while waiting for the big show to begin, but once it did, oh's and ah's could be heard from every car in sight. The display was put on by the Four Flags Chamber of Commerce.
