The Masons of Dowagiac will dedicate a memorial marker in a brief ceremony at Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac on Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m. to commemorate Mitchel Robinson, one of the founders of the Grand Old City.
Robinson and Jacob Beeson assisted Nicholas Chesbro in the purchase of land for a railroad right-of-way.
Recognizing the importance of the location, they platted the town in 1847.
Mitchel Robinson settled in Pokagon Township in 1832.
He was a successful farmer, held several offices in township government, a county judge and delegate to the 1850 state convention.
Robinson became a member of the Dowagiac Masonic Lodge shortly after it was established in 1855 and remained a member until his passing in 1863. The ceremony will be held at Robinson's gravesite in the north portion of the old section of the cemetery.
