LANSING – In the midst of the state budget crisis, departmental overspending and a lack of accountability in government, a Senate committee Tuesday took a major step toward reforming government and officially opened discussion on a proposal initiated by state Rep. Jack Hoogendyk, R-Kalamazoo, to effectively make Michigan a part-time legislature state.
Hoogendyk's resolution would require lawmakers to finish by May 1 each year; restrict lawmakers' salaries; cut health and retirement benefits lawmakers receive; and require a three-fifths majority vote by both chambers to enact a general tax increase.
