ST. JOSEPH – Deputies from the Berrien County Sheriff's Office investigated a single-car rollover fatal accident June 2 on Danneffel Road near M-140 in Bainbridge Township.
Deputy Steve Campbell reported that a 1982 Camaro equipped with nitrous oxide lost control and rolled over multiple times before coming to rest.
The driver, Gary Wiedmann of Watervliet, was ejected and found dead on arrival.
Front seat passenger Thomas Wiedmann of Berrien Springs was severely injured and transported by Air Care to a Kalamazoo Hospital, where he was reported in critical condition. The accident remains under investigation. Witnesses reported hearing the nitrous ignite, causing the vehicle to accelerate rapidly and eventually crash.
