Column: I’m too competitive to ‘take it easy’

I never thought I would say this, but I now officially know and can admit that I am getting older.
I know, I know, I am only 25 and I have no idea yet, but I know something is different with me when, after just one softball game, I am moaning and groaning the next morning about how sore I am.
Last night, our Co-ed softball team, Grip, had our first game. We play for the YMCA League and had a ball last year, so we're back again.
We played MACS (which is a team made up of police officers) in our opening game and we won. This is the team that knocked us out of the tournament last year, so we were ready for them – kind of.
We all had fun and it's always nice to open your season with a win, but man am I sore today. I must have pulled something in my leg while running to first base after a hit because I am walking with a limp this morning. Not to mention I can barely straighten out my thumb.
This is pathetic for me. I used to come home from games with bruises, knots, bumps, scrapes etc. and was never in this much pain.
Yes I stretched before hand, and we have had practices before this, so it's not like I went out after one year and played my heart out.
Someone at the game told me this is a sign to "take it easy."
Take it easy? No thanks. I'm an athlete, always have been. I like being competitive and I'm not even sure I know what it means to "take it easy."
I'll just deal with my pain and move on. Sounds good to me! I'll just have to stretch a little more before hand.
I know I'm not the only one on our team who is in pain today. We have quite a few players who have had injuries that limit them to what they can and can't do right now.
To see us run to first base is a pretty comical site as well. There are a few players who still have their speed, but most of us lost it and our "hustle" consists of a slight jog to first.
Overall I think this will be another fun season. We couldn't ask for a better group of people to play with and I'm excited to see what this year holds for us.
