NILES – Growing Kids Growing, a youth division of The Niles Garden Club, held its very first meeting Saturday at the Niles District Library.
In honor of Arbor Day, the children planted a tree on the west side of the building, to help bring shade to the picnic area.
The Niles Garden Club's committee chairmen, Lyn Butus and Wendie Stephenson of the youth program, and Carol Noid of the Arbor Day committee, worked together to plan and oversee the event.
The meeting began with a discussion about types of trees, their benefits to our environment, and planting techniques, followed by the tree planting ceremony.
The children helped with shoveling the dirt and mulching, after which each child received a fir seedling and information on how to plant and care for it.
