City council sets dates for upcoming Niles events

NILES – Parades, walks and festivals headlined Monday night's consent agenda at the Niles City Council meeting.
The annual Memorial Day parade is a go for Monday, May 28, with approval by the City of Niles at its regular Monday night council meeting. The American Legion LaRue Messenger Post No. 26 will organize the parade beginning at 10 a.m.
Niles Main Street DDA also received approval to conduct its second annual "Arts in Motion" event downtown Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23.
The Pregnancy Care Center of Niles received approval for the annual LifeWalk to take place in the downtown area June 16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A public hearing was set for 7:25 p.m. on June 11 to discuss adopting a resolution to approve the extra millage needed to bring the millage rates to the maximum allowed by Truth in Taxation.
Another public hearing for 7:20 the same evening will receive comments regarding the City's Community Development Block Grant Action Plan for fiscal year 2007.
Council member Tim Skalla thanked several individuals for all their help with the repairing of the fencing for Silverbrook Cemetery.
"John Easton welded for 12 hours. My family and several other individuals, such as Chris Williams and John Hoskins have put in hours of work. I have met so many wonderful people during this project," he said.
Other items approved included:
Accepted the quote of $3,060.00, from Arnt Asphalt Sealing of Benton Harbor, for completion of tennis court crack sealing and painting work.
Accepted the quote of $3,960.00, from Star Exteriors of Niles, for the replacement of the roof on the Salt Storage Building at the Street Department Garage.
Approval of the emergency repair of DART Bus No. 6, at Randy's Auto Service of Niles at a cost of $3,122.66.
Approval of a contract with Mead and Hunt, Inc. of Lansing, for design engineering services needed for runway rehabilitation at Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport, with total costs of $18,404.97 requiring a local match of $460.12.
