NILES – The only action seen on the softball field Wednesday night was in the pitchers circle.
The Niles softball team hosted South Bend Washington, as fans and athletes had a chance to watch two of the areas toughest pitchers go head-to-head.
In the end, the Lady Vikes claimed a 1-0 victory in a game that last just about an hour.
Jenna Ignowski was able to add another win to her record, bringing her to 14-5 on the season. Ignoiwski threw 15 strikeouts and allowed two walks and two hits behind that catching of sister Nicole Ignowski.
Katie Boocher suffered the loss, but still put on a show, striking out 10 Viking batters and allowing just two walks and one hit.
"Not too much offense by either team when two power pitcher's dominated the game," Niles coach Jim Arnold said.
The Vikes made good use of their only hit in the game. Patty Anton was the lone Viking batter to connect with the ball. A fielders choice, walk, stolen base and a wild pitch allowed Heather Daniels to score the only run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Vikes had a scare in the top of the inning, though, as a Washington batter tripled the ball to right field with no outs.
"That's when it got a little tense," Arnold said.
Luckily, Ignowski regained her composure and struck out two batters.
"We'll take the victory anytime we can get one no matter how many hits we get," Arnold added.
Niles, now 15-5, will travel to South Bend Riley on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. game.
South Bend Washington is 7-13 on the season.
