The Dowagiac junior varsity baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Comstock on Friday.
The Chieftains (11-4) took the first game 7-4. Dowagiac dropped the nightcap, 9-2.
Shaun Bruens (4-1) picked up the victory in the opening game as he went the distance, allowing one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Offensively for the Chieftains, Brent O'Brien and Tanner Melvin both doubled and drove in two runs. Brandon Douglas singled twice and drove in a run, while Bruens singled and scored twice.
Andrew Kurdelmeyer also drove in a run.
In the nightcap, Cody Cox took the loss as he worked four and a third innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits. Cox (3-2) struck out four and walked two.
Douglas worked the final inning and two-thirds, giving up two runs on three hits with a strikeout.
Douglas singled and doubled for the Chieftains, who also got a RBI from Andrew Hurrle.
"We had a nice little comeback in game one, while Bruens was superb on the mound," Dowagiac coach Bryan Henry said. "Cox pitched well enough to win in game two, but we left too many guys on base. We just couldn't come up with the big hit, whereas Comstock did. Comstock is a solid ball club."
