Dowagiac grabs Brandywine Invite title

NILES – For the second straight year, Dowagiac's varsity baseball team captured the championship of the Brandywine Invitational.
The Chieftains (11-2-1) defeated the host Bobcats 17-7 and then knocked off Constantine 15-4.
Brandywine defeated Constantine 15-0 in the other game.

Jake Cox (4-1) picked up the victory in relief of Dowagiac starter Tony Saviano in the opening game against the Bobcats.
The Chieftains and Bobcats were tied at 2-2. Dowagiac trailed 4-2 before scoring five times in the top half of the third inning to seize a 7-4 lead.
The Chieftains added three runs in the fifth and seventh innings and scored four runs in the sixth.
Brandywine added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete the scoring.
The Bobcats actually out hit the Chieftains 10-9.
Dan Reidenbach had a two-run home run for Brandywine, which also got a double from Eric Rush.
Keith Prak and D.J. Edgerly both singled twice and drove in a run. Matt Dodson and Mike Kasper both had two-run singles. Nick File also singled and drove in a run.

Reidenbach tossed a no-hitter for the Bobcats, who scored six runs in the first, two runs in the second and seven runs in the third to shorten the game due to the mercy rule.
Reidenbach homered and doubled for the Bobcats, who finished with 14 hits. Noah Udell tripled, while Cam Ondresky and Mikel Lindzy both doubled.

Dodson got his first start of the season and tossed a 4-hitter with two strikeouts in four and a third innings of work. Tim Bartee also took the mound for the first time and pitched the final two outs.
The Chieftains, ranked No. 4 in Division 2, banged out 10 hits.
Kasper led Dowagiac offensively as he was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Kyle Prak singled and doubled, while Troy Stover added a single and three RBIs.
Dowagiac coach Andy Kruger picked up his 100th career victory with the Chieftains' win over Constantine.
Kruger is now 100-73 for Dowagiac in sixth years.
