The Dowagiac junior varsity baseball team had to work overtime to pick up a victory on Friday night.
The Chieftains and visiting South Haven played eight innings, with Dowagiac pulling out a 7-6 victory.
The second game was stopped with one out in the third with the Chieftains leading 13-5.
Shaun Bruens worked the eighth inning in relief to pick up the victory for Dowagiac, which is 2-1 on the season. Tanner Melvin started for Dowagiac. Tyler First also made a pitching appearance in the game.
Alex Miller, who was 2-for-4, delivered the game-winning RBI single to score pinch runner Brandon Douglas.
First had a double and an RBI for the Chieftains, as did Melvin. Brent O'Brien and Drew Cooper both finished with two hits and an RBI.
"It's always nice to win ball games in extra innings," Dowagiac coach Bryan Henry said. "Miller had a big base hit over the drawn-in infield and Bruens threw strikes in the eighth to get the win. Both First and Melvin also pitched well. However, we have to get better defensively."
