Niles track and field teams open seasons next week

NILES – Dowagiac will join former Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference foes Niles, Battle Creek Lakeview, Kalamazoo Central, Portage Northern, Sturgis and Vicksburg at the Grand Valley State University Laker Challenge.
The indoor track meet will be held for "big schools" (Class A and Class B) on Monday for boys and Tuesday for girls.
The Class C and Class D schools will compete on Wednesday and Thursday.
Cassopolis, Berrien Springs, Eau Claire, Hartford and Marcellus will be among the "small schools" competing in the meet in Allendale.
Field events will begin at 4 p.m. They will consist of long jump, high jump, shot put, pole vault and discus, if the ground is dry.
Running events will begin at 4:30 p.m. They will consist of the 50-meter hurdles, 50-meter dash, mile run and 1,600-meter relay. The Distance Medley Relay will consist of a 800-, 400, 1,200- and 1,600-meter run.
As of March 12, a total of 24 teams had signed up for the Class A and Class B meet. Some 20 teams were scheduled to compete in the Class C and Class D meet.
