United Way campaign nears 91%

NILES – The United Way of Greater Niles has announced that the 2006-'07 fundraising campaign is nearly complete with pledge totals estimated to reach 91 percent of the $280,000 goal.
"A few entities have yet to report final results, but we anticipate reaching more than 90 percent of our goal," said John Stauffer, executive director.
Campaign volunteers and board members will be honored at the United Way's annual meeting to be held this year on May 16 at the Salvation Army facility at 424 N. 15th St., Niles.
Also announced was the March 29 deadline for funding requests. The United Way of Greater Niles currently provides support for 16 local non-profit agencies. Funding priorities include services that nurture youth, strengthen families, foster independence and elevate the quality of life for the elderly. To be considered for funding agencies must have not-for-profit status qualifying for a charitable deduction under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and have a charitable solicitation license (if applicable) from the State of Michigan. Other requirements include a volunteer board of directors and an annual audit. Additional requirements may apply.
The United Way conducts fundraising year-round and welcomes pledges at any time to support local charities. Donations may be sent by mail to the United Way at P.O. 375, Niles, MI 49120 or made online with major credit cards at www.unitedewayniles.com.
Donations are used to help fund local non-profit agencies that provide services in the greater Niles area. More than $10 million has been raised for local charities by the United Way of Greater Niles since its founding in 1953.
