Bond committees forming

NILES – Brandywine voters can expect to see two campaign committees leading up to the May 8 bond election.
Brandywine Community Schools already established a school-sponsored committee for distributing factual information about the upcoming bond. Interim assistant superintendent Karen Weimer said a 'vote yes' campaign committee was also forming.
On Monday night, the district's committee was briefed by Bev Bonning, an attorney with Thrun Law Firm, on campaign finance law. All school employees, including administrators, teachers and support staff, have to be careful not to violate the state's guidelines by promoting "vote yes" literature with district funds.
"The bottom line here is common sense," Bonning said.
The district can only run a "factual information" campaign and cannot tell anyone to vote yes. If employees of the schools are on a vote yes committee they must only participate outside their working hours, and they can at no time use district funds, resources or supplies.
"I find that 95 percent of the time if there's a problem it's unintentional," Bonning said.
