Area teams set for semifinal games Wednesday

NILES – The first round of the boy's basketball district tournament kicked of Monday night and Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan all know who their opponents will be on Wednesday.
In the Class A tournament at Portage Northern, Kalamazoo Central took a 61-50 win over Mattawan, advancing the Giants to the semifinals against Niles. Kalamazoo Central enters the contest with a 17-3 record, while the Vikes are 5-15. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at Portage Northern.
In Class C action at Watervliet, Bridgman blew past Eau Claire in the opening game, 84-62. The win advances the Bee's to Wednesday's game against Buchanan. Bridgman enters the semifinal contest with a 19-2 record, while the Bucks are 10-10. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
In the second game of the evening, River Valley ended host Watervliet's season by taking a 58-53 win.
The Mustangs (5-15) will face Brandywine (8-12) in the second game Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 7:45 p.m.
In other district basketball action, defending district champion Cassopolis handed Colon an impressive 72-42 loss in Class C action at Constantine.
The Rangers (14-6) will face Centreville (13-5) in the district semifinals Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Constantine High School.
In Class B action, Battle Creek Harper Creek eliminated the Edwardsburg Eddies from the district tournament on Monday night with a 67-34 victory at Three Rivers High School.
Brent Shuttleworth led the Eddies with 10 points.
