CASSOPOLIS – Cass County commissioners March 1 renewed the agreement for services between the Village of Marcellus and Marcellus Township and the county and its sheriff's office.
Marcellus contracts with Sheriff Joe Underwood for 16 hours per day, Monday-Friday, and 12 hours per day on Saturdays and Sunday of law enforcement coverage.
The village foots 52 percent of the cost, or $96,019 for fiscal year 2007, plus all of the $21,583 budgeted for crossing guards.
The township pays 48 percent of the $184,652 tab, or $88,633, and 100 percent of telephone fees. The police department is in the township hall, so Marcellus Township is also responsible for the office space, heat and electricity. The Sheriff's Office assigns two vehicles to Marcellus. Village President Larry Davis and Township Supervisor John Grib already signed the agreement.
