Ten years ago someone had an idea. Why not help disadvantaged women in their quest to better themselves?
The idea spread until now, celebrating its 10th anniversary, Dress for Success has become an international organization, expanding to more than 80 cities in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
What a wonderful way to help others who may have not had the same advantages.
The object is to provide professional attire for women, to help them make a better impression at their job interviews and on the job.
Too often there are almost new unworn clothes hanging unused, whether because of a size or style change.
These jackets and skirts could serve another woman well to give her the confidence she needs when applying for employment.
During the 10 years, more than 350,000 women have been helped, with both their self esteem and their desire to succeed. This year, the week of March 11 to March 17 has been designated as S.O.S. Week – Send One Suit.
Women across the nation are being asked to donate one new or nearly new suit, which could be used to help another woman enter the workforce.
Locally, the Dress Barn in Mishawaka, Ind., is a drop-off location. This women's clothing retailer has been a sponsor for the last five years.
In that time, 99,000 suits have been donated by customers during the annual S.O.S. week.
Last year there was a 57-percent increase in donations, with the organization's officers looking for 2007 to bring in even more donations.
Additional sponsors this year at The Style Network and VIACTIV brand, which also accepts the freshness seal from its calcium and vitamin soft chews, donating 50 cents for every one to Dress for Success. Not only will you feel good about your donation, your closet might like the breathing space.
