Adopting a pet should be considered an option

Seeing an animal living behind bars for no reason whatsoever is heartbreaking. What did they do to deserve ending up at a shelter? Most of them aren't even bad animals – they were dropped off or brought to the shelter for a number of different reasons beyond their control. Whatever the case, they just want to find a new home, new family and have the comfort of being loved.
When you adopt a pet from an animal shelter or humane society, you give a second chance to a friend in need. But the pets aren't the only ones who benefit – you benefit too! Adopting a pet will bring you the warmth of a faithful friend and the satisfaction of knowing you helped give the gift of life to a loving animal.
Adopting a pet from an animal shelter gives a home to an animal that would otherwise be turned away or euthanized. It also creates space for another homeless pet to come into the shelter and receive treatment, care and safe housing while it awaits its chance to be adopted into a loving home.
Many myths follow the stories of why animals are in shelters, but the majority of them are not true. Many people believe that pets in shelters are there because they have behavioral problems. The sad truth is that most of these animals are where they are due to their previous guardians' ignorance and indifference. Often, people who have acquired pets from shelters and pounds are pleasantly surprised at the fine companions they have adopted. Animals with serious and obvious behavioral problems are not put up for adoption. Remember, many excellent animals waiting to be adopted will exhibit minor behavioral problems. Some are scared while others are excited. This should not be held against them as they are in a stressful environment.
While most of the pets in shelters and pounds are mature animals, there are also puppies and kittens available for adoption.
