With the Michigan High School Athletic Association's wrestling tournaments well under way, it is time to turn our attention to other sports.
Our area basketball and volleyball teams are getting set to begin post season play.
The volleyball teams at Brandywine, Buchanan, Cassopolis, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg and Niles will wrap up their regular seasons this weekend with conference tournaments.
Brandywine, Buchanan, Cassopolis and Edwardsburg will all compete in the Lakeland Conference Tournament, which will be held at Bridgman on Saturday.
The Lady Eddies have had the best season of the six schools we cover at Leader Publications.
Plus, Edwardsburg already owns a victory over defending league champion Coloma during the regular season.
Niles, which has had a solid year under new head coach Linda Goodrich, will travel to Portage to compete in the Big 16 Conference Tournament at Portage Northern High School.
Dowagiac on the other hand, will head to Three Rivers for its first Wolverines Conference Tournament.
We want to wish good luck to the Bobcats, Bucks, Rangers, Eddies, Vikings and Chieftains on Saturday.
The following weekend, all of our teams will begin state playoff competition with the districts.
Niles will be back at Portage Northern, while Dowagiac will return to Three Rivers to compete in the Class A and Class B districts respectively.
Edwardsburg will travel to St. Joseph for its Class B districts.
Buchanan will host a Class C district, which will include Brandywine. The Lady Rangers of Cassopolis will travel to Constantine for their district.
There is still a week left in the regular season of boys basketball.
Dowagiac has had the best season of the six area schools.
The Chieftains are in first place in the Wolverine Conference with three games remaining. Dowagiac can wrap up at least a share of the title with wins tonight and next Tuesday against Three Rivers.
The remaining teams in our coverage area have had up and down seasons.
But come the first week of March, you can throw out all the records.
That is the great thing about the post season. Each team starts fresh. They can turn around a mediocre or bad season and make it a success.
We look forward to getting out and covering our sports teams as they hit the tournament trail.
We hope the fans will come out and support their local teams.
