CENTREVILLE – With two games remaining in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference, the Ancilla College women's basketball team clinched a birth in the conference tournament with a win over Glen Oaks Community College (3-21, 1-11 MCCAA) 63-49.
After a rocky start on the road, losing their first four, the Lady Chargers have bounced back, winning their last two games on the road and three out of their last four overall.
Ancilla (12-12, 5-7 MCCAA) was led in scoring, rebounds and assists by Ashley Morales. The sophomore guard dropped in 23 points with a 77 percent shooting effort to lead all scorers, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists. Jessica Shinsky (Niles) and Jena Martin both contributed eight points, while Shinsky, Anissa Butler and Kristy Gilbrech all had five rebounds. Crystal Combs, Gilbrech and Butler had three assists each to lead the Lady Chargers.
"We did not rebound well," commented Ancilla coach Dave Liverance. "The game was physical and we did not make the right adjustments, and that's my fault. The girls battled the whole game and had an overall solid shooting night [46 percent from the field]. That is what carried us. We turned the ball over way too much, just trying to create something when it wasn't there. Our post game was solid with 14 points and 10 rebounds [Shinsky and Butler]. We set out to qualify for our conference tournament, and we met this goal. Once again our defense led the way, allowing only 49 points."
Ancilla returns to Charger Arena in the LifePlex for their final home game of the season today at 5:30 p.m. against Grand Rapids Community College.
Ancilla College is a Catholic, two-year, co-educational, liberal arts college in Donaldson, Ind. sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.
