It was a long night for the Dowagiac varsity wrestling team as it traveled north to Plainwell and dropped a pair of Wolverine Conference matches.
The Chieftains, who did not have school on Wednesday due to the weather, looked sluggish in losing to Otsego on a tiebreaker and then dropping a 44-25 decision to the host Trojans.
Dowagiac and Otsego tied at 34-34, so the match was decided by a tiebreaker.
"Not one of the better nights for the Dowagiac Chieftains," Dowagiac coach John Green said. "We have good days and we have bad days. Maybe the snow day threw us off. Our inconsistency is a little bit frustrating. We probably looked a little bit past Otsego."
Picking up wins against Otsego were Andrew Roden (103), Richie Hutchinson (135), Nathan Long (140), DeShaun Baylock (160), Nate Behnke (189) and Drew Staley (215).
The Chieftains got wins from Nathan Cottrell (112), Bobby Price (119), Hutchinson, Baylock and Behnke against Plainwell.
"Bobby Price and Nathan Cottrell both avenged losses from earlier this season," Green said. "On the bright side, DeShaun, Richie, Nate (Behnke) and D.J. (Tartt), who was in the JV line-up, all had good nights."
Against Otsego, Tartt, Sinjin Ownby and Kyle Abbott all recorded pins in junior varsity action. There were just two junior varsity matches against Plainwell. The Chieftains split those matches with Tartt picking up another pin.
