It was a night the Dowagiac varsity volleyball team would probably like to forget.
Visiting Comstock took advantage of every Dowagiacmistake in defeating the Chieftains 3-0 in a Wo-lverine Conference match on Thursday night.
The Lady Colt swept the Chieftains 25-13, 25-19 and 25-13.
The Chieftains were looking to pick up their second straight conference win as they were coming off a victory over Allegan the previous Thursday.
Comstock had lost to Allegan earlier in the year, so confidence was high heading into the match for Dowagiac.
Things unraveled quickly for the Chieftains, who only scored 13 of its 45 points when it was on the offensive. The remaining 32 points came off of Comstock mistakes.
"This was about the worst match we have played all year," said Carl Greulich, Dowagiac's varsity coach. "I was really confident going in and I thought we would play well. I was so wrong."
Greulich pointed out that the Chieftains' passing and serving were their undoing.
Dowagiac struggled to get the ball to its setter, who in turn had trouble getting the ball to the hitters.
When Dowagiac got a chance to serve and go on the offensive, it was unable to do so with any consistency, save the second game.
The Chieftains had one offensive point in the opening game as Brittany Bruens served up a winner.
In the second game Dowagiac earned 11 points off of its serve, led by Allison Frontczak with five points. Stephanie Barnas finished with two points, as did Emily Primley.
"It's the same thing over and over," Greulich said of the team's problems with passing and serving. "When we lose, those are the things that break down. We're not talking very well. Comstock wanted it more than we did, that was obvious."
Frontczak had a solid night for the Chieftains as she finished with two kills, four aces and two blocks.
Dowagiac also got three kills and one block from Bruens, while Barnas finished with 18 assists and three aces. Brittany Gnatz led the team with eight digs. Tasia Diaz finished with three digs.
Dowagiac will be back in action on Monday when it competes in the St. Joseph Quad. Play is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
