LANSING – The Michigan Association of School Administrators (MASA) announced it will award more than 50 Distinguished Administrator Awards at its midwinter conference in Kalamazoo this week, including Larry Crandall for 19 years.
Crandall retired in 2006 after 36 years with Dowagiac Union Schools, including his last seven as superintendent.
The awards will be presented Thursday at a noon luncheon during the MASA midwinter conference at the Radisson Plaza Hotel at Kalamazoo Center.
Distinguished Administrator Awards go to MASA members who will retire this year from public school service to undertake the next phase of their lives.
"The job of school administrator is a challenge – and one that seems to grow harder every year," said William Mayes, MASA executive director.
"Communities expect their school leaders to be experts in so many areas.
"Administrators are expected to be outstanding public speakers, savvy negotiators, sympathetic listeners, aggressive problem solvers and uncompromising advocates. The people we honor today are community leaders who have met and, in many cases, exceeded those expectations."
MASA is a statewide association which represents superintendents and first-line administrators of Michigan's local and intermediate school districts.
The mission of MASA is to develop leadership and unity within its membership to achieve the continuous improvement of public education in Michigan.
