Resolve to take some time to do nothing

I'm writing this New Year's Day. I've done nothing today, except prepared a mid-day dinner, cleaned the kitchen, polished the glass-top stove, ran two loads of dishes in the dishwasher, and now a load of laundry is in progress.
Now it's evening – dark outside, and I don't feel that I've done much.
I really don't consider myself lazy but I took advantage of a holiday that's really a non-holiday and did nothing.
Now really, what purpose does this holiday have?
We've celebrated the beginning of the New Year last night and now today is rather anti-climactic.
Football games? Get real -I'm not a sports enthusiast.
So you see, there's really no real purpose for today except to use it as a non-day.
I'm sure you're all excitedly waiting to know how we celebrated the arrival of 2007.
Like many years past, we had dinner with friends in Marcellus and were home by 9:20 that evening.
I managed to stay awake until 10 o'clock to watch Garrison Keillor's program on PBS.
Midway through the program of loud blue grass fiddling, I fell asleep.
By 10:35 we gave in to the excitement and went to bed. The boom of fireworks alerted me to the fact that midnight had arrived, and I turned over and was soon back in the land of nod.
Wow – isn't that great?
At least we didn't have hangovers this morning!
Now that another year is here, I realized that once again I didn't make any resolutions.
Drat! How can that be? Football games certainly didn't distract my intention.
Given the fact that I've done nothing really constructive today (and I'm waiting for the New Year's Day Strauss concert from Vienna to begin), I think I should attempt to compose some goals for the next 364 days.
They are:
10. I will try not to wave to people I think I know but don't really know.
9. I will smile more, even when I have gas.
8. I will try to stay awake at night to watch the 6:30 evening news.
7. I will always use my turn signal, even when I don't know where I'm going.
6. I will get a flu shot next fall (I haven't had one for two years).
5. I'll try not to blow my nose in public.
4. Thanks to advice from my friend, Bill, I'll not intentionally kill spiders.
3. I'll speak kindly of my elders, even when they don't remember who I am.
2. I'll take more naps and read more books.
1. I'll not make resolutions next year.
Okay, so that list is far from exciting, but I know I will be able to keep all of those promises (at least most of them).
I will also continue to tell stories to anyone who will listen (my granddaughters are always willing to listen!), I will laugh and see the bright side of life, I will enjoy my friends, I will clean the kitchen and do laundry, I will love my family and I will take time to relax.
