Chieftains fall to ‘Cats

THREE RIVERS – The host Lady Wildcats took it to Dowagiac in the second and third games Thursday night in a Wolverine Conference vollyeball match.
Three Rivers defeated the Chieftains 25-23, 25-9 and 25-12.
"Our serving and passing left us in the second and third games," Dowagiac coach Carl Greulich said. "We didn't do much."
The loss dropped Dowagiac to 1-1 in the conference.
Sarah Shelton, Allison Frontczak and Emily Primley, all of whom had six kills, led the Chieftains.
Tasia Diaz and Calie Daniels each had one service ace.
Dowagiac returns to action on Thursday when it hosts the Chieftain Invitational.
Battle Creek Lakeview, Bridgman, Buchanan, Cedar Springs, Coloma, Eau Claire, Edwardsburg, Niles, Plainwell, River Valley and South Haven will join Dowagiac.
The tournament will be played at the Dowagiac Middle School. Pool play is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.

Freshmen volleyball
The Lady Wildcats, 15-25 and 15-25, defeated the Dowagiac freshmen volleyball team on Thursday night.
Haley Spencer and Marquira Smith both had two aces for the Chieftains, while Taylor Gross finished with an ace.
The Chieftains played with just six players due to the high school band concert.
Coach Emily Frontczak was pleased with the way the team performed despite being short-handed.
"They played so well," she said. "I was so impressed with them. Hopefully this will help them play with more confidence."
Junior varsity volleyball
Three Rivers also defeated Dowagiac's JV volleyball team on Thursday night.
The Chieftains fell to the Lady Wildcats, 22-25 and 17-25.
No statistics were available for the match.
The girls played pretty well," Dowagiac coach Kristien Carpentier said.
