Giving season should run through the entire year

People have opened their hearts and pocketbooks this holiday season to give food and money to those who are having a hard time making ends meet.
Though, except for one bitter cold spell, the weather has been above normal, but that is not necessarily how the beginning of the new year will be. Energy costs to heat homes must be met.
The United Way of Greater Niles has announced a special grant has been awarded to the Salvation Army in Niles to help replenish their Utility Assistance Fund. The volunteer board of directors approved a $1,000 special grant for the Salvation Army's fund that provides emergency assistance for those threatened with utility shut-offs in the Niles area. The fund ran out of money in November and will not be replenished until mid January.
"We are pleased to be able to offer support for the neediest among us at this time of year," executive director John Stauffer said. "It also shows how a strong local United Way in the community can make a difference. Our fundraising campaign is continuing and we are asking everyone in the community to make a pledge."
The food banks in the area have seen an increase in the number of those who need assistance.
Christmas baskets were distributed over the weekend to families in the Edwardsburg area.
Unfortunately funds need to be replenished and food needs to fill the shelves at the food pantry in Edwardsburg and at Helping Hands of Cass County in Cassopolis.
The churches in Dowagiac also try to keep up with the needs of people in the community.
With the help of everyone who is able to donate something, the needs of those who need help will be met.
Everyone who has already donated so others can experience a better holiday season should be congratulated. If they are able to dig even deeper into their pockets, that is even more wonderful.
What goes around, comes around.
