CASSOPOLIS – Christmas came early for the animals at the Cass County Animal Shelter. Huge bags of food, toys, cleaning supplies and litter were brought in Saturday by a steady stream of donors. Monetary donations were also accepted by the grateful animal control officers.
Visitors were treated to a wonderful spread of homemade treats for humans.
Barbara Hill of Cassopolis, a dog walker, was one of the many volunteers who stopped in to wish everyone a good holiday. "I walk the little dogs," she said, including the featured Dog of the Week, Josie, a sweet 6-year-old Jack Russell terrier. She will take the dogs, one at a time, down to the Cass County District Library and back.
One lucky puppy also found a home and a new family, as the 4-month-old black Lab was adopted by Sally and Dick Cox of Edwardsburg.
Dick, a retired conservation officer with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said this makes "number three and that is enough."
Their two other dogs, Jack and Jill, a yellow Lab and a beagle Jack Russell mix, are now 8 and 9 and were both adopted from the shelter.
"They are the best dogs," Sally said. She owns and operated Sally and Company hair salon on M-62 in Edwardsburg.
The Cass County Animal Shelter continues to accept donations and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 323 M-62 North, Cassopolis. On Wednesday the shelter is open until 6 p.m.
