RICHLAND – The Dowagiac varsity volleyball team played well in its season opener at the Gull Lake Invitational.
Dowagiac defeated Gull Lake in pool play, 21-14 and 21-16.
The Chieftains were defeated by Homer, 21-14, 20-22 and 15-7; defeated by Paw Paw, 23-25, 25-16 and 15-0; and defeated by Delton, 25-14, 23-25 and 15-9.
Dowagiac then moved into the Silver Division of the championship round.
The Chieftains defeated Parchment, 15-25, 26-24 and 15-11, but were knocked off by Allegan, 27-25 and 25-23.
"The girls played pretty well considering the small amount of time we had to get ready," Dowagiac coach Carl Greulich said. "The competition was good and we got to see some of the teams in our conference. We were missing some players due to illness and ACT testing. That always hurts, but the other players stepped up and gave a good account of themselves."
Emily Primley led Dowagiac with 26 kills. Brittany Bruens finished with 15 kills and six aces.
Primley also had 24 digs, while Brittany Gnatz led the team with 32 digs.
Primley led the team in assists with 26, while Tasia Diaz finished with 25 digs.
Sarah Shelton finished with a team-leading 19 blocks.
Dowagiac hosts Buchanan tonight in a non-conference match.
